For the Composition Assignment I chose this antique fire alarm. Over the weekend I stayed in Brooklyn New York, the hotel I stayed at had a beautiful view of the Brooklyn bridge, originally I was going to photograph the bridge for this assignment; however as I was walking out of the hotel and I walked past this antique emergency alarm fixture. The hotel had a very rustic feel, and it had greenery that climbed the building, so the bright red really popped and stood out against the warm browns, blacks and greens of the hotel. I am a true fan of vintage things, and this fixture represented an older time for this place, the community around it had adapted to modern world, but here this alarm stood in its true form with just a fresh coat of red paint.
I loved the detail of the rim, I wish I could have gotten a top view angle so that you could also appreciate the perfect blend of shapes that the alarm displayed. The hexagon at the base, the multiple sized circles on top, along with oblong circles and straight line decorating the bottom of the phone box. And also the the frilled collar to add a classy touch. I chose to only really manipulate the different levels of lighting, I didn’t see the need to use the blur feature, but I did change the perspective degrees on my iPhone 11 camera (between 1x and 0.5x) to zoom in and out to photograph more and less of the view. I also loved how the sun and angle of the shot created a light reflection, naturally in the picture.

I like your comments, revealing your thinking process... Remember, I ma trying to retrain your idea of what a photograph could be... by that I mean we are used to taking pictures "of" things rather than creating a composition of light and geometry that uses objects... there is a difference. Since you were in Brooklyn, there would have been an amazing range of possibilities, visually. I need you to take some time and "go shooting", walk around more, look closely, fill the frame with design, eliminate the sky for now, and think in terms of straight, classic photography... I'm not a big fan of tilting the camera for now... Perhaps you have more work that you will put in your Google Drive that I can look at. Remember to shoot a minimum of 50 shots for each assignment and put everything in your Drive. The 4th and last shots are more about looking at shape and design more... and are my favorites of this series...
ReplyDeleteHello, Krystal I like how the sun hits the fire alarm in your photos and I especially like the fourth photo. Red looks really nice in a downtown area and it makes your photos pop and stand out!
